SCRIE Senior Rent Freeze

Stay in your Home with a Rent Freeze

The Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption helps eligible NYC seniors remain in qualifying housing. Approved tenants pay a frozen rent while the landlord receives a tax credit for eligible increases. SCRIE does not find an apartment or issue a housing voucher.

Who May Qualify

  • Age 62 or older.
  • Your name is on the lease or eligible share certificate.
  • Combined annual household income is $50,000 or less.
  • You spend more than one-third of monthly household income on rent.
  • You live in a qualifying NYC rent-regulated unit or covered development.

The administering agency reviews the housing type and all eligibility requirements. Landlord permission is not required to apply.
